This morning someone asked me “Why can your Images go so big?”
One reason is that we use the best equipment available. For a landscape image to look good printed 20-feet wide requires the highest resolution, the best lenses and the best technique.
For the highest resolution we use a technical camera. This is very similar to the gear that Ansel Adams used but it has been updated for digital capture. Instead of 4×5 film we use a digital back made by a Danish company called PhaseOne. To get the best out of the ultra-high resolution digital back requires very special lenses. The lens you see me using above is made by a German company called Rodenstock. That lens costs more than my first car. Holding it all together is the camera body which is made by the French company Arca Swiss.
The gear is very expensive and very finicky but the results are breathtaking.
The gear however is only part of the reason that our files can go so big. Another critical issue is how the file is processed after capture. With over a decade of experience creating huge prints we’ve learned a lot.
We have over 900 images that enlarge well to 20-feet. To see them click here.
